1876 is an especially noteworthy moment in local history because of the notorious “Chesaning Murder” that took place in the fall. But there was another scandal, earlier in that same year, that also managed to garner considerable attention from newspapers across the country.

Marvil Secord (1801-1886) is little more than a footnote in local history, having built the first frame dwelling in the village of Chesaning, but the life he lived was so remarkable that it merits a closer look.
